About me

IMG_3391.JPGEver since I first bashed my thumbs and knuckles on my grandmother’s piano as a toddler in an attempt to make up a tune on the few keys I could actually reach, I knew I was going to find music a LOT of fun. I started piano lessons when I was five, picked up the cello a little later on and sang a bit while I was at it. Basically music became a brilliant and totally addictive hobby, and that’s what it’s been ever since. Over the years my love of music has taken me on some amazing adventures, and led me to some of my proudest achievements.

I learnt so much from my best piano teacher – a real passion for musical discovery, the value of patience and persistence, and the immense satisfaction of developing a wonderful new skill that I could truly call my own. I learnt a lot from another piano teacher, too – that water down the back of the neck did not actually help me to improve my sight reading, and that the 'motivational' coin placed at the far end of the keyboard always seemed to disappear just before I reached the top note of the scale… I’m happy to say, my musical beliefs and teaching techniques are inspired by the former teacher, not the latter.

As a fully qualified teacher coming from a classroom teaching background, I have extensive experience of helping learners of all ages – from young children to adults – to get as much as they possibly can from their learning, try their very best, and by doing so unlock the potential they have to achieve their goals. One of the most rewarding and fascinating aspects of being a teacher is matching teaching and learning strategies with the individual personality, needs and interests of each pupil; a good teacher must always be a good learner. Above all though, learning (particularly something taken up as a hobby) should be fun, and this is where my experience as a primary class teacher comes to the fore (yes, even with adults!). I try to make my teaching as dynamic, engaging and varied as possible so that every single learner comes away feeling not just motivated and excited about where they are going with their learning, but a real sense of pride at the many milestones they reach along the way.

As a teacher I have been fully CRB checked and can provide references upon request.
